R&D&I IN VARIETY DEVELOPMENT

Bionest’s R&D&I department works tirelessly throughout the year to meet the company’s high goals in the development of new varieties to remain at the forefront of the berry sector.

The team makes a constant effort in all areas of organic farming. From the constant investment in the latest irrigation techniques, the planting and execution of residue transformation processes in the field, to the most demanding tests in the laboratories.

To evaluate the results properly, everything is prepared and organized for an event that takes place several times during the year, where the progress achieved in each variety is presented. This event is the BIONEST MANAGEMENT’S ORGANIC BERRY TASTING.

WORLD BERRY DAY

With the commemoration of International Berry Day, this event takes on a special meaning and relevance and reinforces the link between the product and the members of the company.

PARAMETERS TO BE EVALUATED IN THE TASTING

The purpose of the tasting is to evaluate in detail the results obtained on the selected berries.

The objective of the analysis is clear;

To assess the developing parameters that will directly impact consumer perception to offer an exclusive and high-quality organic product for supermarket shelves.

  • Flavors: Measure the degree of acidity, bitterness, sweetness, etc.
  • Nutritional values: Value the amounts of fibers, vitamins, minerals, etc. that they contain (we compare and review the laboratory reports).
  • Transport resistance: Obtain the maximum durability and resistance times of the fruit.
  • Water demand: Calibrate the demand for water resources per unit (we compare and review the laboratory reports).
  • Sizes and shapes: Define sizes and shapes of selected varieties to meet market demand and consumer requirements.
  • Plant structure and health: To achieve a vigorous, disease-resistant plant with an architecture that allows good ventilation and at the same time shows productive potential.

MORE RESISTANT, BETTER TASTE, LONGER SHELF LIFE, CONSTANT INVESTMENT IN R&D&I

The Bionest management’s organic berry tasting is one of the Berrynest Group’s most interesting and demanding events. They are held in different locations and over several days at different times of the year.

The company has more than 30 years of experience in the processing, packaging and marketing of berries and other organic fruits and vegetables. This event is almost a ritual for the Bionest family and has been taking place since its first year of foundation back in 1992.

THE TASTING IN THE FIELDS OF BIONEST

Bionest is in an optimal location for the farming of its berries. The cool and constant winter temperatures and the 9-10 hours of light that the fields in the Huelva area, Almonte, have, climatically, make the strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries grow large, resistant and full of vitamins.

The entire management team goes to the fields and crops in full activity to assess the ideal time of maturity and harvesting of the fruit. The most representative berries of the varieties under study are individually selected and taken to the offices where, together with the rest of the experts, they test and try the recently harvested varieties. Our traceability system guarantees that we have all the information on the varieties from the field to the table.

THE TASTING IN THE OFFICES

Bionest’s management, as well as experts from each department of the company, focus on getting the most out of this tasting. The office tasting offers an environment more similar to the one the end consumer will have at home.

Discovering and defining new flavors, different textures, shapes and smells of berries by the team is a way of guaranteeing and making profitable the efforts and advances made by the R&D&I department in the development of new varieties.

“As the largest producer of organic berries in Europe, we have the responsibility and enthusiasm to produce the best organic berries of the future”

RESULTS AND EXPECTATIONS

“We have developed varieties whose sensory and productive characteristics fully meet our demanding criteria, both in the short term for planting and production at the commercial level for 2024, as well as for the 2026-2027 crops, which is when we will be able to enjoy the full presence of our Otomana Strawberry in Bionest’s organic fields.

As always, our customers are invited to participate in these assessments, the optimal period being from February to April each year. You can participate either on-site or by asking us to send you samples.”
