JANUARY TO SEPTEMBER

Our production schedule

The season for our organic strawberries

Bionest promotes the improvement of its products and services, for which we invest on the study of new varieties that allow us to offer our products at any time of the year.

Once harvested, the shelf life of any variety of strawberry (either Marisol, Rociera, San Andrés, or any other) is very limited, this is the reason for which a lot of resources are invested in researching how to solve the perishable nature of this fruit using the most natural techniques available.

As a consequence of this research we have developed a selection of varieties that make it possible for our organic crops to produce from January to September, when the environmental conditions are optimal for its cultivation and harvesting, being able to rotate between different varieties that can perform well over the different season of the year.

Packaging

“TaylorMade” presentations of our products

Bionest strives to offer to its customers a wide variety of packaging for the sale and commercialisation of their products, whether fresh organic fruit, or frozen such as IQF or aseptic puree, these different packagings are appealing to the final consumer.

Organic strawberry: bright, attractive and tasty

Long shelf life organic strawberry

Organic Strawberry

Bright, appealing and so tasty.

Strawberries are succulent fruit, fleshy and with a lot of fragrance. Its aroma stimulates the appetite and it is the main ingredient in many salads, jams, sauces … and of course in many of the best-known desserts.

It is the most representative red fruit of all, with a bright and soft appearance, serving as a great source of vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, calcium and water. All of these nutrients and minerals are an essential part of a healthy and balanced diet like ours, the Mediterranean diet.

The main difference with the typical Freson is especially in its size (smaller) in its color and durability.

Taste and durability

A selection of specific varieties

The strawberries grown using organic techniques are more nutritious, tasty and have a higher content of antioxidants and C Vitamin. It also presents more dry matter, or in other words, “they are not artificially swollen”, thus they have a higher concentration of flavor compared to other strawberries produced by intensive agricultural means.

We all have seen quite often fresh goods grown with agrochemical pesticides (pesticides, fungicides, etc.) tend to last longer on supermarket shelves. In Bionest we pursue this same Shelf-life but thanks to an exhaustive study of all the phases that our strawberries go through, from the moment that they are in the seedbed until they reach the final customer’s table:

  • Selection of specific varieties
  • Soil treatment to gain more resistant fruits
  • Environmental balance to avoid an excessive appearance of mold precursors or that favor the inhibition of the ethylene present in the fruit (causing excessive maturation)
  • Investment in R&D to find the best packaging…

Each variety of strawberry presents its own characteristics such as the color tone, the texture of its flesh, its own sweet-acids balance, imperfections found in a visual analysis and that also has a different shelf-life.

First hand information. What are the market’s needs? Having this information from importers with such high quality standards in terms of shelf-life like German, Dutch, Swiss or Danish markets, is key for us to improve.

Transporte | Bionest

Stronger Organic Berries

At Bionest we take care to collect our strawberries from their petiole preserving their appearance and avoiding the formation of bruises. We select clean, healthy strawberries, which are firm and, whenever possible, completely red, anticipating from the first hour the problems that may arise in transportation, whether fresh or finished products.

Responsible use of natural resources

Bionest is the largest Spanish grower and exporter of organic strawberries. Despite the volume of our business, we are committed to taking good care of the environment by forbidding the use of pesticides and controlling pests via predatory insects. This practice has a positive impact, preventing soil contamination crop after crop, so that the ecosystems are not altered and their biodiversity can be preserved.

  • Aphids: We release of parasitic auxiliary fauna such as Aphidius colemanii (parasitic wasp) and predators such as the larvae of Chrysoperla carnea (Crisopas) and larvae of Adalia (Ladybugs)
  • Red Spider: for this pest we release predators mainly Phytoseilus persimilis
  • Trips: we release Orius laevigatus, which is the great predator of this plague.
  • Lepidoptera caterpillars: treatments based on Bacillus thuringiensis are carried out.

For conventional strawberry cultivation, products such as methyl bromide and methyl iodide are used, which are potentially toxic substances. On the contrary, “organic soils” are chemically and biologically superior in terms of the balance they reach between organic and inorganic elements. Among the key properties, there is a greater microbial life (mycorrhizae, microscopic organisms), the fixation of carbon and nitrogen, a greater activity of enzymes and micronutrients or a more diverse macroscopic animal life (arthropods, molluscs, worms, etc).

Agricultural techniques

Ecological / biological agricultural techniques

We apply certified organic agricultural techniques, which allow us to work with ecosystems in an integrated way: maintaining and improving the fertility of soils, producing food free of chemical residues; using the greatest number of renewable and local resources, maintaining the genetic diversity of the ecosystem and its environment and avoiding the pollution generated by conventional techniques which allow farmers to carry out their work in a healthy atmosphere:

  • BRC Global Standard for Food Safety. Developed to help distributors comply with their legal food safety obligations and guarantee the highest level of consumer protection.
  • Bio Suisse, organic certification for agricultural products and wild collection under the strict norms of Bio Suisse for the Swiss internal market.
  • Global G.A.P., a standard that represents a global level in agricultural practices among suppliers and sellers.
  • CAAE, the Committee of Ecological Agriculture, which is a 100% non-profit organization that certifies all the organic production that is generated in our region, Andalucía.

Our commitment with organic farming and the quality of our products drive us to focus our investments on R & D, applying our findings in the field and promoting knowledge about organic agriculture systems.
